Summary of The Intouchables
“The Intouchables” is a French movie written and directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano. This is based on the true story of Philippe Pozzo ei Borgo and his caregiver friend Abdul Sellou, whom Driss knows in the movie. Philippe is a wealthy man, paralyzed from the neck down after a paragliding accident. He lives in a luxurious apartment with his spoiled teen daughter and staff members. On the other hand, Driss is an ex-convict who just got released from prison. While Philippe was interviewing for a full-time caregiver, Driss went into the interview to be rejected to avail of the unemployment benefit. However, because of his straightforward nature, Philippe employs Driss as his full-time caregiver. Driss initially had no intention of being hired, but he gradually developed a bond with Philippe. Driss’ antics were like pouring hot water on Philippe’s hand to check whether he could feel it or sometimes asking him to pick up a ringing phone. These little moments capture their friendship. Driss approaches his work without any sympathy. He does not treat Philippe with pity, which makes Philippe’s life tiresome. Later, he finds out that Philippe has a pen-friend named Eleonore. Driss tries to set up a meeting between Philippe and Eleonore, but Philippe backs out at the last moment. Then Driss faces a problem where he has to deal with his cousin who was caught doing the wrong things. This makes Philippe ask Driss to leave the job of caregiver. Thus, they were separated. Interestingly, the movie ends at a calm moment where Dris again sets up a meeting for Philippe and Eleonore.

This movie reflects a beautiful journey of life and friendship. After watching this movie, I realized how hard life is and how it can be enjoyed in good company. Besides, I have found that a meaningful connection between two people from different worlds is not out of reach. I liked that Driss never treated Philippe with pity because of his disabilities. Even though Philippe and Driss are men from radically different parts of society, they somehow manage to grow together.
