A Romantic Movie: Me Before You

Summary of Me Before You

“Me Before You” is a romantic drama film released in 2016, based on one of the best-selling novels of the same title, published in 2012. The novel “Me Before You” (2012) was inspired by the author’s true story, Jojo Moyes, and the film is directed by English theatre and film director Thea Sharrock. The tale focuses on two individuals, Louisa Clark and Will Traynor, who embrace and appreciate life in the film. The film begins by showing a typical girl named Clark, who lost her job as a waitress in a pastry shop. She leads an ordinary life but is now desperately seeking a new job for a living. She dreams of studying fashion design but gives it up due to her lack of confidence in herself and her family’s poor financial status. She ends up working as a caregiver for Will, a former banker who became paralyzed five years ago after a motorcycle accident. Will is an adventurous person, but now he no longer recognizes the meaning of his own life. Therefore, the main character, Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), decides to die by assisted suicide despite falling in love with his caregiver, Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke). When Clark learns about it, she tries various methods to renew his desire to live.

Meanwhile, Will pushes her to appreciate her life and pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer. Gradually, Clark falls in love with Will and expresses her feelings for him, but he turns her down and eventually dies by suicide. After his death, Clark moves to Paris for higher education, and the film ends with her continuing a hopeful new journey. The film “Me Before You” discusses a slew of ethical dilemmas surrounding euthanasia. Jojo deliberately left the title’s meaning opaque, but she likes to consider it a reference to Will and Louisa, meaning “who I was before I met you.”

The Most Liked Part of Me Before You

The best part of the story is how Clark and Will help each other with their issues in life. When Clark discovers Will’s desire to commit suicide, she tries various methods to bring back his desire to live and a reason to be alive. It shows a loving and caring personality of Clark. At the same time, when Will learns about her dream of becoming a designer, he pushes Clark to step outside her comfort zone and encourages her to achieve her dream. Will may not be able to get the life he wants for himself, but he wants Clark to utilize her opportunity.

The Most Disliked Part of Me Before You

The worst part of the story is Will’s suicide. The way the story is set where Will has to die is unacceptable. The writer could have used him as an example of how life can still be fantastic for an individual like Will.

Me Before You - A Must-Watch Movie

Embracing and appreciating life is the central theme of this movie, and it will take viewers on an emotional journey. “Me Before You” is an inspiring story with romance, but I see it as one that shows the hardships within the adult working life and how life can change at any moment as you read on. The story is presented in such a way that it is enjoyable to watch and understandable to everyone. It has a plot twist at the conclusion and several lessons for viewers to implement in their own life. Therefore, I strongly suggest everyone watch this movie.
